Who We Are & What We Do

The SPE Composites Division (D39) is a technology group within SPE (Society of Plastics Engineers), a not-for-profit society. We provide an organized forum to promote and disseminate information on the science, engineering fundamentals, and applications of engineered polymer composites . As such, the Composites Division organizes composites-related technical conferences across North America and its members participate in conference and trade shows throughout the world to promote the benefits of composite materials and report on the latest in materials, processes, and application developments in the field.

Our division annually participates as a co-organizer with the SPE Automotive Division for the SPE Automotive Composites Conference & Exhibition (ACCE), the world’s leading automotive composites forum, held mid-September in the Detroit metropolitan area, and each May we organize a session at the SPE ANTEC Conference, whose location changes each year. We also organize a session at the American Composites Manufacturers Association’s (ACMA’s) Composites show.

Additionally, we occasionally hold special events like our Composites on the Move show last held in 2008 at the National Composites Center in Dayton, Ohio.

Our board also has recognized significant contributions to the composites industry through our:

  • Composites Person of the Year Award
  • Sabic Composites Educator of the Year Award

Our Mission & Goals

Our mission for the SPE Composites Division website is to grow this site into a portal that connects all members of the composites supply chain – from additives and chemical intermediates to resin and reinforcement suppliers, compounders, processors, and OEMs –and provide information that educates and informs the entire supply chain about the broad range of commercially available and developmental composites materials and the benefits they bring to society. We will strive to offer content that is of broad interest to individuals in a wide range of functional roles, including students, teachers, researchers, engineers, marketing and sales professionals, end users and the general public.

The goals of the SPE Composites Division are to:

Help grow the industry by effectively and objectively promoting the use and benefits of polymer composites,
Build strong international cooperation with other engineering societies and industry trade associations to benefit the industry and improve the resources we can provide to our members,
Act as a conduit to effectively connect SPE members with the entire composites supply chain,
Develop industry-leading educational programs, including conferences, that provide technical information about polymer composites to informs and educate industry and the general public, and
Cultivate a strong sense of community across the entire composites-industry supply chain.
